LUGANO HISTORICAL CENTER
Our visit can definitely start from the Piazza della Riforma, candidate as the most beautiful square in Ticino. It shows off its beauty with neoclassical palaces in the center of Lugano, a meeting place that deserves a stop “it is the good living room of the city” meeting place of the Luganos, which also hosts numerous events such as the Jazz Festival or the Christmas market.
A network of alleys and alleys branch from the square in various directions, where you can stroll through sparkling and luxurious windows, an example is the Via Nassa the most IN of Lugano.
The square connects various points of historical interest of the city, such as the Cathedral of St. Lawrence, the church of Santa Maria delle Angioli, the long lake, the parks and the LAC very modern structure dedicated to the events of Lugano (art exhibitions, music and theater).
By taking the Via Nassa to our right we will find the church of San Carlo Borromeo, built between 1640 and 1642. Continuing we will find the church of Santa Maria of the Angioli, which houses a masterpiece, the fresco of Bernardo Luini (Disciple of Leonardo da Vinci 1480 – 1532). Next to the church is the LAC (Lugano Art and Culture).
Continuing in the tree-lined boulevard that skirts the long lake, we will find the Belvedere garden (on the right from Santa Maria del Angioli and the LAC).
The garden is enriched with flower beds full of colors, an important collection of art and centuries-old trees.
Returning to Piazza Riforma via Nassa in the opposite direction, you cross Piazzetta Maraini to find yourself in one of the most characteristic and evocative places in the city, Via Pessina, where historic buildings offer shops with many local products. Continuing in Piazza Cioccaro you will discover the beauty of Palazzo Riva-Ghioldi, one of the oldest buildings in Lugano.
Climbing to via Cattedrale, up to the terrace in front of St. Lawrence Cathedral, with views of the city. The cathedral dated 1517 is embellished with frescoes from the 14th and 16th centuries and a wonderful Renaissance facade.
From the Cathedral back to Piazza Cioccaro you continue along Via Soave to Piazza Dante, where you can appreciate the church of San Antonio, with works by Petrini and frescoes by the Torricelli brothers. Continuing towards Contrada dei Verla and Via Giosué Carducci, which leads in front of the church of San Rocco, with frescoes by G. Discepolis.
Behind the church is the Maghetti District, a lively commercial area, on its right, in Via Canova, stands the Cantonal Museum of Art.
Continuing the path to Villa Ciani that you can see in the distance. Along the way we will cross Independence Square with a monument in the center in memory of the volunteers Luganesi and Cisalpini who died in the Battle of 1798.
Through the beautiful park of Villa Ciani you reach the Lake.
The park of the villa has its roots in 1800 when the Ciani brothers, Milanese nobles bought the property.
Over time the park has undergone several improvements.
The park is made up of: oaks, olive trees, plane trees, limes, palm trees, horns, camellias and azaleas, a sight for the eyes to be admired in the spring during flowering.
In the same area there are other facilities such as the Cantonal Museum of Natural History and the municipal library.
The border of the park is marked by the mouth of the Cassarate River on one side and Lake Lugano on the other.
