The center of Como and Its Points of Interest
The city of Como, overlooking its famous lake, Lake Como (Lario), captivates with its historic center, surrounded by ancient medieval walls, winding cobblestone streets, elegant boutiques, and lively squares with bars and restaurants.
Among the main points of interest are: Piazza Duomo, with its Gothic-style Como Cathedral (Duomo) and the Broletto, one of the city’s masterpieces; Piazza San Fedele, a charming square with the Romanesque-style basilica of the same name; Via Vittorio Emanuele, one of the most renowned shopping streets; Piazza Volta, a vibrant spot for aperitifs and outdoor dining year-round; Porta Torre, one of the historical entrances to the walled city.
Piazza Cavour, the largest square in Como, frequently hosts events (such as Lario Libri in September) and is located in front of the dock where you can catch a boat to visit the most famous locations around the lake (Cernobbio, Blevio, Torno, Laglio, Argegno, Menaggio, Bellagio, Varenna).
As you stroll along the lakeside, you’ll encounter famous monuments like the Tempio Voltiano, a museum dedicated to Alessandro Volta, the inventor of the battery and a native of the city, which celebrates Como’s scientific history. Another highlight is the iconic Monument to the Fallen, along with the sculpture “The Life Electric” by renowned international artist Liebeskind, located on the Outer Harbor.
You can also walk or rent a city bike to reach Villa Olmo and its park, a neoclassical villa that often hosts events and exhibitions, or head to Villa Geno by walking along the picturesque lakeside promenade of Viale Geno.
At the beginning of Viale Geno, you’ll also find the Funicular station that takes you to Brunate and its lighthouse, where you can stop for lunch at one of the many restaurants, or continue on a scenic trek towards the Lario mountains, with a break at one of the mountain huts along the way.
